Cosimo Cavallaro
Internationally acclaimed multimedia Artist Cosimo Cavallaro marks a pivotal moment in cinematic digital art experience Chocolate Jesus Melts, “Passion of the Crust” is a first of its kind, seamlessly blending sculpture, identity, faith, transformation and what is considered sacred.
The hypnotic performance centers on a life-sized chocolate sculpture of a transgender Jesus slowly melting atop a heated aluminum plate, filmed by seven distinct camera feeds including an exclusive behind-the-scenes view and set to the escalating intensity of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro.
The cinematic installation invites viewers into a meditative confrontation with embodiment, impermanence, spirituality, and cultural iconography. As audiences watch the sculpture slowly collapse, the experience evolves into a hypnotic meditation on mortality, rebirth, and the dissolution of identity itself.
Transgender fashion model Rain Batingana served as the muse for the sculpture. Cavallaro created the work using a silicone mold of Batingana’s nude body combined with a laser scan of her face before casting the figure entirely in chocolate.
“I had no way to know how it would happen; it was beyond my imagination. The melt signifies the disappearance of identity and the act of becoming one with nature. In dissolving, the body sheds its boundaries and returns to substance. What we witness is not destruction, but transformation, a return to material, to earth, to something elemental beneath the surface of image and icon.”
